Case study eCommerce development

How Provis rebuilt the Natural Uniforms store on a new WooCommerce theme.

Natural Uniforms sells scrubs and medical uniforms to healthcare professionals in the United States. Its store had outgrown the old setup: thousands of size and colour variations, two languages and slow pages. Provis rebuilt it on a new theme, with custom modules for speed, search, discounts and shipping.

At a glance

  1. Problem

A large two-language catalogue, thousands of size and colour variations, ran slowly on the old store: product listings, large catalogue pages and search.

  2. Solution

Provis rebuilt the store on a new WooCommerce theme with a child theme and custom modules for bulk variation loading, search in the browser, a multi-buy discount and live shipping rates.

  3. Result

Product listings that ran about 20 database queries per product now run about 2, search shows results as the shopper types, and the store is live and supported.

The situation

A catalogue that had outgrown the old store.

Natural Uniforms sells scrubs and medical uniforms to healthcare professionals. nuniforms.com, nuniformswholesale.com, WholesaleScrubSets and WholesaleScrubs are one client group: Natural Uniforms, the supplier. This is the consumer store; the others are the wholesale store, WholesaleScrubs and WholesaleScrubSets.

The old store held thousands of size and colour variations in two languages. Each variable product ran about 20 database queries, which made category and product pages slow, and the translation plugin ran out of memory on large catalogue pages. Retail orders also feed the same supplier operation as the wholesale stores. So Provis rebuilt the store on a new theme rather than patching it.

How the old store handled a large catalogue

  1. Cataloguethousands of sizes and colours, in two languages
  2. Product listsabout 20 database calls per product
  3. Big pagesran out of memory
  4. Searchslow, waiting on the server
  5. Orderssent to the same supplier as the wholesale stores

How the old store handled its catalogue, and where it slowed down.

The problems, and what fixed each

Four slow or fiddly spots, and what fixed each.

These are the four problems Provis fixed in the rebuilt store.

  1. Category and product listings were slow

Each variable product ran about 20 database queries, and a large catalogue has thousands of variations.

What Provis builtVariation data loaded in bulk

The store now loads the variation data for many products at once instead of one product at a time. That took about 20 queries per product down to about 2.

  2. Large catalogue pages ran out of memory

The catalogue is in two languages, and fetching every translation at once used too much memory on big pages.

What Provis builtTranslations fetched in chunks

The store now fetches translations in small batches, so large catalogue pages load without memory errors.

  3. Search was slow

Every search went to the server and waited for the answer.

What Provis builtA search index in the shopper's browser

The product index is searched in the shopper's browser, so results appear as they type with no round trip to the server.

  4. Multi-buy discounts and shipping needed manual setup

The multi-buy discount and the shipping cost both had to show correctly in the cart.

What Provis builtAn automatic discount and live shipping rates

A multi-buy discount of 20% is applied automatically in the cart, and live ShipStation shipping rates show there too.

How the work ran

Built in three phases, from the new theme to the page reviews.

  1. Phase 1, December 2025 to March 2026The new theme chosen and a local development environment set up
  2. Phase 2, April 2026The embroidery step and order handling, the women's scrubs category and its revisions, and the style 4401 product page
  3. Phase 3, May 2026Home page and page reviews, with the latest work on 18 May 2026
  • What was built: a new store theme with a child theme and custom modules for variation loading, search, the multi-buy discount, live shipping rates and embroidery.

  • Supplier link: retail orders are routed to the supplier's order system, the same operation that serves the wholesale stores.

  • Two languages: the catalogue runs in English and Spanish, with translations fetched in chunks to keep pages light.

  • How it ran: a Provis developer pair, with dated screenshots of each change and a local staging copy checked before release. The scope grew from the rebuild into performance, search and embroidery.

Built for speed:

Less work for the server on every page.

Variation data loads in bulk, translations arrive in chunks and search runs in the shopper's browser, so a large catalogue stays quick.

About 20 database queries per product became about 2.

Search results appear as the shopper types.
